Charleston, SC One of the Friendliest Cities in the South

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, March 27, 2018

Abberly Crossing Apartment, Ladson, SCWhen it comes to friendliness, hospitality, and warmth, cities often get a bad rap: The traffic, the crowds, the lack of manners! Southern cities, though, tell a different story: Despite the hustle-and-bustle, they still manage to exude the graciousness of small towns and radiate the warmth of a Sunday potluck after church.

While old-fashioned hospitality seems to color the entirety of our region, some cities still manage to distinguish themselves as the friendliest of all. So we asked, and y’all answered, supplying us with fifteen of the South’s friendliest cities. There may be crowds in these Southern destinations, but they’ll smile at you; and when there’s a long line outside of that crazy-popular barbecue spot, well, people will respect your place in it—no pushing or shoving.

That’s just how we city slickers do things in the South … New York and L.A., it’s time to take notes. And, number one on the list of Friendliest Cities in the South...

1. Charleston, South Carolina

Why Charleston Is a Top Place to Live

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, March 13, 2018

Abberly Crossing Apartment, Ladson, SCFew cities on the Top 100 Best Places to Live list are as steeped in their history as Charleston. Since the mid-1970s the Mayor has generally been credited with helping grow Charleston into a modern small town while maintaining the antebellum charm that drew so many to it in the first place. If you look at the other cities on the Top 100, you’ll see some trends in amenities and programs that make them great places to live. Many of those ideas had their seeds in Charleston.

The city began its modern resurgence by developing the waterfront area into public space with surrounding low-rise development. Getting the parks right was an important first step. Parks are forever. Charleston has invested greatly in creating public waterfront spaces.

The Spoleto Festival, a two-week long arts festival, helped put the city on the international map and forced it to up its game. If you’re going to present a world-class event you have to be a world-class city.

Additionally, the Citadel is one of the most prestigious military colleges in the nation, which has its home in Charleston. The South Carolina Aquarium is located here as well, and Charleston has ranked well on the Top 10 cities for historic preservation, top 10 downtowns, top 10 spring break destinations among others.

Charleston has borrowed ideas from other cities too. A program that celebrates the start of the school year with a giveaway of backpacks and schools supplies to 10,000 families. There is also a monthly open house in the mayor’s office and any resident can drop in on the first Tuesday of each month and tell say what’s on their mind.

Creating great cities for all residents is one of the core values that is looked for in its Best Places.

Charleston is One of the Best Cities for Those Who Love the Arts

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, March 06, 2018

Abberly Crossing Apartment, Ladson, SCSouth Carolina isn't the first place that comes to mind when you think about the arts. However, the state has hidden pockets of cultural wealth that will rival big art markets like New York and San Francisco. These are the five best cities in South Carolina for the Arts.

  1. Edgefield
  2. Greenville
  3. Beaufort
  4. Myrtle Beach
  5. Charleston

Charleston, SC

Charleston is considered by some to be art in itself. The old city has seen its share of beauty and pain, misery and joy, peace and turmoil. Besieged by war and the place of human trafficking, Charleston's history is just as colorful as some of the homes in the area. Despite this, Charleston is home to some of the most beautiful art in the world. The Charleston Regional Alliance for the Arts is one of many organizations dedicated to creating thriving art communities in Charleston. Home to the Spoleto Festival, Charleston opens her doors for 17 days and nights to showcase opera, jazz, theater, symphonic and chamber music/ The venues include Charleston's historic churches, theaters, and outdoor spaces. For over 40 years, Charleston has used Spoleto to advance performing arts. Founded by a Pulitzer Prize winning composer to create an American counterpart to Italy's Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, Charleston's Spoleto Festival immerses the entire city into the pursuit of art. What could be better than visiting Spoleto? How about living in Charleston year round? It's not hard to move to Charleston. All you have to do is decide which great community will be your next home. Your only decision is which one is best for you.
