Why We Love the Charleston Area

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, August 28, 2018

Abberly Crossing Apartment, Ladson, SWe’re proud to call the communities where we live and work our home. For over 50 years, HHHunt has expanded throughout the Mid-Atlantic and we’ve got lots of community pride! That pride is one of the reasons that we’re highlighting Charleston, South Carolina! As the oldest and largest city in the state, Charleston is rich in history and known for its flavors, sights, sounds and traditions that are unique to this southern city.

There is always something to do in Charleston. The thriving city is home to charming cobblestone streets, guided walking and horse-drawn carriage tours, beautiful parks, gardens, museums, mansions, and so much more. Historic downtown Charleston is a favorite spot where you can find the iconic strip of colorful homes known as Rainbow Row, the College of Charleston, and King Street. And, if you’re a history buff, then a visit to Fort Sumter is a must. Located in Charleston Harbor, Fort Sumter is the site of the first shots fired in the Civil War. The South Carolina Aquarium is one of the most visited aquariums in the country and showcases more than 5,000 wild animals. The Sea Turtle Care Center is a popular area of the museum. During the summer, there is no better place to relax and soak up the sun than one of the numerous islands surrounding Charleston. There truly is always something to do!

Charleston was named the world’s best city by Travel + Leisure Magazine. It’s no surprise why residents at our Abberly Crossing Apartment Homes love living in Charleston. Charleston, SC is a Millennial Magnet

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, August 21, 2018

Abberly Crossing Apartment, Ladson, SCWhere are the millennials going? Charleston, South Carolina according to a recent USA Today piece, “Post-college towns’ brim with youth, jobs.”

The piece uses recent U.S. Census data to identify 289 cities that have more 20-somethings than teens—or simply put, cities that are “Millennial Magnets.” For Charleston, and only a dozen other cities, there is a 2-to-1 or higher ratio. So why are millennials coming to Charleston, one of the oldest cities on the list? USA Today says:

“A booming tech start-up economy and a thriving arts and restaurant scene have helped this…tourist magnet do something that places across the USA have been trying to do for decades: attract young, college-educated workers and keep them there as they start families. The mild weather and easy access to nearly 200 miles of beaches don’t exactly hurt.”

The article calls the recent demographic change in Charleston “nothing short of breath taking,” and that the area’s lifestyle and urban design sensibilities have played major draws for millennials. “They’re in Charleston to live in Charleston.”

As post-college grads flock to Charleston, companies are coming to the Lowcountry to take advantage of the rapidly growing workforce. Lisa Maki, a co-founder of the California tech start-up PokitDok, says half of their employees are based in Charleston and all of them are software engineers. Maki mentions that good engineers in Charleston are “…about half the cost of comparable workers in Silicon Valley,” and not to mention, office space in Charleston is “probably a quarter of the price.”

The piece also highlights the job growth being driven by the many Charleston-based technology startups hiring in the region, including SPARC, Bibliolabs and Benefitfocus, in addition to major aerospace company, Boeing.

With a population growing three times the national average, Charleston is poised to reach a population of more than 1 million in the next 15 years.

Ladson, SC is a Great Place for Millennial Job Seekers

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, August 14, 2018

Abberly Market Point, Greenville, SCAbberly Crossing Apartment, Ladson, SCAlthough the Great Recession hit South Carolina harder than most places, recent economic indicators show the state is making some headway, if slowly. While the unemployment rate hasn’t budged much in the past year, millennials here are primed to find jobs.

Young adults, or millennials, in South Carolina are attracted to the laid-back Southern lifestyle, coastal towns, thriving cities and lower rents throughout the state.

Some of the most successful businesses in the Palmetto State are in sectors such as aerospace, alternative energy, automotive manufacturing, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, distribution, food processing, forestry and wood products, plastics and chemicals as well as recreation, according to the state Department of Commerce. The Charleston metropolitan area, in particular, is seeing a rise in its millennial population as the tech industry moves in.

NerdWallet crunched the numbers for 66 cities and towns in South Carolina to determine the best places for millennial job seekers.

Best places for millennial job seekers in South Carolina

4. Ladson

Ladson, a census-designated place in both Berkeley and Charleston counties, had one of the higher surges in its millennial population with an increase of 25% from 2010 to 2013. While it has the highest median rent on our list at $1,034, residents also have higher median salaries at nearly $50,000 a year. Ladson is primarily a bedroom community, but an auto manufacturer — General Dynamics — is based there. Ladson is bordered by both North Charleston and Summerville, and runs parallel to U.S. Route 78 and I-26. The best-known attractions in Ladson are the Coastal Carolina Fair held annually and the Exchange Park events center.

Millennials Can Afford to Live Here, and Actually Want to

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, August 07, 2018

Abberly Crossing Apartment, Ladson, SCForget San Francisco, Washington D.C. and New York City.

There are cities where twenty- and thirty-somethings who can’t afford to spend $2,500 can and want to live.

The Penny Hoarder has developed a definitive list of the top 25 coolest and most affordable cities for millennials. It’s based on a rigorous analysis of housing and local price data, economic statistics and something called a Coffee Fanatic Score. Yes, you read that right.

You probably haven’t seen many of these cities on “Top Millennial City” lists before, and that’s for good reason.

These are cities where young people crippled with student loan debt can actually find work and afford a one-bedroom apartment, but also find a new brewery or wine bar on weekends. Their millennial populations are growing — or already sizable — and they tend to be better for walking or biking to work.

No. 13 — Charleston, South Carolina

  • Affordability Rank: 17
  • Millennial Happiness Rank: 15
  • Economy Health Rank: 10

Things to do: Charleston has a good balance of nightlife, food and the outdoors. King Street is the go-to place for brunch, shopping and bars and restaurants. Revelry Brewing Co. is a highlight of the ubiquitous beer scene. (Did we mention millennials like beer?) And, as with any millennial-friendly city, there’s a farmers market.
