One of the reasons we love summer is all the fresh food and delicious herbs available! Did you know that you could bring some of those fresh flavors into your apartment? A container garden allows you to do just that! These small gardens are perfect for any size apartment and the best part is that you can keep the garden growing year-round to add fresh ingredients to your meals. Plus, it helps to brighten your apartment and looks great!
Don’t have a green thumb? Don’t worry, we’re here to help! Creating and maintaining a container garden isn’t difficult and can be a lot of fun.
Here are the steps you need to build and cultivate your very own container garden:
- Decide Where It Goes: It’s important to choose a spot in your apartment that gets lots of light. During warmer months, outdoor spaces, such as balconies and patios are great choices. You also could set up a table near a large window or sliding glass door that gets lots of light. Here’s a tip: Think vertical. Hanging planters and shelves near lager windows can give you even more space!
- Decide What to Grow: Before you begin planting, give some thought to what you want to grow in your container garden. Herbs typically work best because they don’t take up much space and are so versatile. Consider herbs, such as basil, sage, thyme, cilantro, and mint. Red and green cabbage as well as tomatoes can work too.
- Get the Materials: Once you’ve got your location and know what you want to plant, it’s time to gather the tools and materials you’ll need. Food52 has some great tips for getting started and choosing the right materials. Here’s another tip: Don’t forget to get high-quality soil. It can make a big difference!
- Build It: Now that you’ve got everything, you can build your container garden. How adventurous you want to be is up to you. If you’re new to gardening or want a low-maintenance approach, you can buy containers and small pots at local hardware stores or garden nurseries.
